Where do you start?
Support for every stage of learning
Piano lessons are shaped around each student’s experience, musical interests, and individual goals. Here is how the journey tends to unfold.
|
Stage one
Beginning the Journey
Develop foundational skills in technique, rhythm, listening, and reading music while exploring repertoire and discovering what makes music meaningful to you. Students build confidence, establish good playing habits, and begin to understand how music works. |
||
|
Stage two
Developing Your Skills
Expand your repertoire, strengthen technical control, and deepen your understanding of musical elements such as phrasing, dynamics, harmony, and musical structure. Students develop greater independence, explore different styles, and learn to interpret music, collaborate with others, and take on new challenges. |
||
|
Stage three
Deepening Your Artistry
Refine technique and interpretation while exploring musical character, stylistic nuance, and personal expression. Students develop their own artistic voice, make increasingly independent musical decisions, and pursue opportunities such as advanced repertoire, composition, examinations, festivals, masterclasses, and collaborative performance. |
Piano at SAM
At Squamish Academy of Music, piano lessons develop well-rounded musicians who can play with skill, understanding, and personal expression. Whether pursuing structured RCM study or exploring contemporary music, students build technique and musical knowledge alongside creativity and independence. Through performance, collaboration, and supportive learning experiences, students discover how music works and how to make it their own.
Developing musical independence
Students develop the skills, knowledge, and musical vocabulary to interpret music, make informed musical choices, and continue learning independently. Lessons balance technical development with creativity, expression, and an understanding of how music works.
Multiple pathways to musicianship
Students can pursue structured study through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), progressing through repertoire, scales, technique, theory rudiments, keyboard harmony, and music history. This pathway develops keyboard fluency, pattern recognition, technical control, and an understanding of music across historical periods.
Students drawn to contemporary music can explore favourite artists, popular repertoire, accompanying their own singing, or playing in a band. Learning may include chords and triads, chord charts, harmonic listening, reading melody lines, and using appropriate online tools and resources. Both pathways help students understand, apply, and communicate music.
Technique in service of expression
Relaxed posture, hand and finger position, and technical control are introduced from the beginning to support comfortable, sustainable playing. Students develop control over tone, articulation, dynamics, and sound colour, giving them more choices for expression and interpretation. Technique is always connected to musical purpose.
From musical understanding to artistry
Through repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary music, students explore how style, historical context, character, articulation, and phrasing inform interpretation. They learn to shape phrases, highlight melodic lines, create moods, and communicate the character of a piece while developing their own musical voice. Students interested in composition can apply their knowledge to original work, with instructor support to refine and develop their ideas.
Performance, collaboration, and shared learning
Studio recitals, RCM examinations, adjudicated festivals, and masterclasses provide opportunities to develop interpretation, confidence, and communication with an audience. Masterclasses introduce students to different instructors and perspectives while encouraging them to learn from one another.
Group learning can be part of a student’s experience from the beginning. Interactive classes balance musicianship, creativity, and collaboration. As students develop, they may explore duets, accompany singers, or join ensemble opportunities such as Becoming a Band, strengthening listening, communication, and the ability to make music with others.
A supportive environment for lifelong musicianship
Students are encouraged to approach challenges with curiosity, use feedback constructively, and recognize that musicians develop at different paces. Celebrating one another’s progress and learning from shared experiences builds confidence, motivation, and connection. Across individual lessons, group classes, and performances, the aim is to help students continue making music throughout their lives.
Music you love
Students are motivated when the music they are learning feels meaningful to them. At SAM, instructors work with students to understand their interests, identify personal goals, and choose piano repertoire that supports both enjoyment and musical development.
A student’s goal might be playing a favourite song, exploring chords and harmony, accompanying their own singing, composing original music, preparing for an RCM examination, or performing with others. Our teachers connect those personal interests with the technical and musical skills each student needs to develop confidence and musical independence.
